Your pool skimmer helps keep your pool water clean so there is almost no dirt or debris sinking to the bottom. Your pool skimmer cleans the water that you actually swim in.
Make sure your skimmer and auto water fill are installed properly. They should be steeled into pool shell as seen here. Additionally, expansion foam and joint seal should be added on the perimeter. So that if and when your deck moves (this is California after all), you do not want deck pulling your skimmer and auto fill away from pool causing expensive leaks.
